Context

In 2020, La Directa magazine launched an investigation surrounding "The struggles and exiles in the villages of Mesoamérica". This article aimed to highlight the link between the causes of exile back to one's native country and the challenges Mesoamerican citizens face upon arrival in Spain. La Directa gathered the extensive results of this research in a printed publication.

A second part of this investigation came about to further the project, but this time focused on the migratory movements into the country. Through real testimonies, a path was drawn from immigration laws to right to asylum, throughout many episodes of violation against the migrants' rights.

Rhythm and structure

Any publication relies on rhythm, which in turn helps build a structure to better allow readers to navigate its contents. At the same time, it's up to the reader whether to approach each article in a straight, item-by-item basis or through a less organized flow, skipping from topic to topic.

Our challenge was to push this rhythm into a web-based publication, while retaining the chapters' consecutive order within the same page. Hence, we used color as our main resource to build contrast between the different topics, as well as the page's scroll feature to provide an appropriate cadence to the message at hand.

Layered reading
By enclosing each section through the scroll feature, we allow the readers to calibrate of the depth of their own reading experience. One may choose to skim by the many available topics or to immerse oneself into each and every one for a deeper understanding.

Enhancing the message
Given the nature of this digital publication, context is key. Throughout one of the page's main sections, the reader may scroll through a diagram while also being provided testimonies by those affected by Spain's immigrant policies.
