Catalogue for an exhibition held at Barcelona’s Palau Robert to mark the 30th anniversary of the return from exile of Catalan President Josep Tarradellas. The visual code used plays with the typographic diversity and impact of the 70s, accompanied by patterns in fashion at the time. The A5-size catalogue has 64 pages and is printed in two colours with foil stamping.

As communication materials for the exhibition Apropa’t a la Ciència (‘Get Closer to Science’), we designed invitations, a press kit folder, four different A5-format cards, and an accordion calendar. In line with the title of the exhibition, we used microscopic images to create an air of mystery and generate interest in the show. The fact that the microscopic photos look completely abstract helps avoid any focus on a specific field of science, which was very important to the success of the communication campaign. Later we created a ‘Year of Science’ calendar featuring exhibition-related activities. The calendar maintained the visual code used in the exhibition materials, and the PRI font, also designed by us, was used throughout.

The catalogue for the exhibition Apropa’t a la Ciència (‘Get Closer to Science’) involved intensive work on editing, design and layout. Based on the texts and the general approach to the show, we proposed a graphic and conceptual discourse aimed at capturing the exhibition as a whole in a publication that would extend its life beyond the closing date. All the text in the catalogue is in the PRI font, which we designed especially for this project. A fold-out cover protects and adds rigidity to the front and back covers.

Within the framework of this complete graphic design project, we created everything from a font consistent with the exhibition design to the last communication element. The key graphic elements are the typography, pure colours, the use of pixels in the treatment of photos, and rationality of form. The graphic components are combined to create a logical flow of communication and serve as building blocks for the design of many different pieces. The modular font is constructed out of pieces, like the tubes that lead visitors around the exhibition. The basis for its design is the skeleton of a cursive font, a distinctive feature that makes the font resemble handwriting. Though we were conscious of the risk involved in working with a non-standard font, we felt it was essential to reflect the exhibition’s focus on research and innovation.

Typography for the exhibition Apropa’t a la Ciència (‘Get Closer to Science’). There are endless font libraries on the market, but when no existing font has quite the right character, we design a special one. In this case, the strong character of the exhibition space designed by Gustavo Gili – featuring tubes and a modular structure – led us to seek a typography that would fit in and convey the air of research and innovation that characterises the exhibition. The font designed especially for the exhibition is a fusion of cursive letters (the type used in handwriting) and technical letters, formed by straight, pure lines. The result is a font that’s easy to read (very useful for the catalogue and booklet), consonant with the exhibition space (due to its modular conception), and has a strong character (it’s unique).
